Move Truecaller to a new Android phone: backup, restore and Premium checks

A phone-to-phone copy can make an app icon appear on the new device without proving that its settings, history or paid entitlement have moved correctly. Keep the old phone available until you have verified the parts of Truecaller you rely on.
Before you start: confirm your phone number, the Google account used for backup, the purchase channel for Premium if applicable, and how you will receive sign-in verification. These can be different pieces of the migration.
1. Make a migration record on the old phone
| Record privately | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Backup account and latest successful backup | A restore needs the appropriate account and an existing backup. |
| Phone number used in Truecaller | Verification and restore may depend on the original number. |
| Premium receipt and purchase channel | Paid access is an entitlement issue, separate from restoring a call log. |
| Blocking preferences and important exceptions | You can compare the new setup without assuming every setting transferred. |
Keep the note in a place you can access securely during setup. Do not store passwords or one-time verification codes in a screenshot album. If you are changing both phone and number, confirm the account-change process before giving up access to the original number.
2. Check the app’s backup before erasing anything
Truecaller’s Android help currently places backup under the profile โ Settings โ General โ Backup. Review the selected Google Drive account and run a manual backup if the option is available. Confirm the app reports a completed backup, rather than only assuming it ran overnight.
The official backup documentation lists items such as app settings, block lists and call-related data, while excluding contact photos and ringtones. Actual selections matter. Inspect what your version offers, particularly optional media or attachments, and keep a separate plan for data managed by the phone or another app.
3. Restore on the new Android phone
- Install the official app and follow its account-verification instructions.
- Use the phone number and Google account associated with the backup when following the restore flow.
- Read the restore prompt and wait for completion before judging what is missing.
- Compare a small sample of the information you need with the old phone.
- Recheck default-app roles and relevant permissions on the new device.
Truecaller says only the most recent backup is available. Avoid creating a new, incomplete backup over a good one while investigating a failed restore. If the expected backup is not found, first check the account and number rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
4. Verify Premium separately
Find the original receipt and confirm the purchase account. Truecaller’s help describes a move flow for some number changes and instructs Google Play purchasers to use the same Google account. It also states that Android/iOS subscriptions are not transferable between those platforms and applies separate restrictions to web purchases.
Those distinctions are a reason to investigate before paying again. If access is missing, contact official support with the plan, purchase channel, date and receipt reference. Share receipt details only through a private official support route.
5. Use an acceptance test before retiring the old phone
- Receive a normal call from a consenting contact.
- Check caller identification for an agreed test call where appropriate.
- Review your blocked numbers and any broad filtering rules.
- Confirm notifications and quiet-mode behaviour on the new phone.
- Check the paid feature you actually use, if you have a plan.
- Make sure the new backup account and schedule are understood.
If a test fails, note whether the issue is missing data, caller-ID behaviour or paid access. These require different investigations. Only reset or dispose of the old device after you have secured the data and account access you need; the app’s appearance alone is not a migration checklist.
